All done checking different insurance companies for another year, except for auto. You would have to ask for a quote, then ask for a quote without propane.

My marina isn’t giant but it’s probably over a hundred boats, and no catamarans. There just really aren’t a lot of catamarans in the northwest for whatever reason, when you look on yachtworld.com they mostly in the Caribbean or Europe. Not that I’ve never seen one before, but it’s not common. No idea about costs associated since I’ve never known anyone that owned one. Honestly if you are trying to get into the PNW, I’d save the catamaran for your second boat. They will require you to insure the boat’s hull to protect their investment and they will probably require a recent survey of the boat.

Trading in your current living space for a boat may come as a shock for most. The amount of living space you have on a boat will likely be much smaller than what you are used to in an apartment or home. You could live in a big city like London on the River Thames in an effort to escape outrageous rent prices. Or perhaps in one of the Great Lakes to enjoy proximity to the work opportunities in cities like Chicago and Detroit. If you are becoming a liveaboard to escape everything, then maybe you’ll head down to Key West to relish in the island lifestyle without going international just yet.

The Pegasus Group, Kent Urbine and Jill Leasure, have used premiums paid to them for insurance for their personal benefit. My policy with Yachtline was cancelled for non payment after I paid the full year premium to the Pegasus Group. I just paid the full year premium AGAIN to Offshore Risk Management to have the policy reinstated. This is theft and insurance fraud and apparently it happened to dozens of Pegasus clients. I will attempt to monitor what actions the Florida Insurance Commission takes against Kent Urbine who allowed Jill Leasure so sell insurance without a license. Yes insurance in the Caribbean for the same level of coverage has gone up %. I have a quote pending for a similar price as I had before but I have to be out of the box during hurricane season or no coverage for storm damage. We have an older boat, 1974, and have had 2 claims which were both paid fairly easily. We now want to go back to the Caribbean and made a phone call to ask about their coverage since they now cover the Bahamas and the Caribbean. The phone conversation resulted in their telling us that we would now need to have three people full time, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on the boat to do the Caribbean!

Socializing is easier in a marina than in a neighborhood. Parties materialize out of thin air on a dock but so do obnoxious neighbors that are now only a slip width away. Neighbors help neighbors in marinas but it’s a two-way street so be ready to lend a hand when needed.
From the day we called, Bulldog Adjusters, they did an amazing job. Bulldog inspectors were always on property during the insurance company inspections and ensured everything was documented properly. I will never worry about going through a hurricane again! I would recommend Bulldog Adjusters to anyone that has gone through a natural disaster and has property/home damage.
That is something that many prospective liveaboards fail to explore. However, an old boat with complicated, outdated systems that were not well maintained, can become an extremely expensive experience. Apart from routine maintenance, we wanted to do some cosmetic improvements. However, we quickly learned that specialized parts and materials are not readily available. Since we are on anchor, the link between the boat and land is our dinghy. Fortunately, we can use water taxis to get to town and back but soon enough the dinghy will have to get a new outboard.

Most lenders allow a maximum deductible of 2% of the insured value. Beware of “named special deductibles” such as storm damage of 10% or more. Generally “boats” are considered to be 26′ and smaller, and “yachts” are 27′ and larger. Generally speaking yacht coverage is broader boat insurance without survey and more specialized because larger boats travel further and have more unique exposures. Ask your insurance agent if they offer what is commonly referred to as a “lay-up” discount. You have year-round coverage with a discount for the months your boat is in dry storage.
I do still spend many nights on my boat, but I would not say I am a committed liveaboard. The official way to say this, is that the boat is no longer my primary residence. At one point, my liveaboard status was a point of pride. I felt I had unshackled myself from convention and found a peripheral orbit to inhabit.

However, an “all risk” policy does not cover every type of loss. In insurance terms “all risk” just means that any risk not specifically omitted in the policy is covered.

What this means is, you pay his doctor bills, until he can no longer have his injuries cured any better and you pay a daily stipend to cover meals, housing, etc. The good yacht insurance companies include Jones Act while the cheapo’s exclude it. So what you do is have a liability limit (P&I) of $1,000,000 on your boat so you have enough to cover a Jones Act claim.

She traded in the corporate conundrum for a life less ordinary and is now island-hopping around the Caribbean. The interest rate is normally the same as their used car loan interest rate, or around five or six percent. If any one of those three is not perfect, expect to pay a lot of money. Unfortunately knowing the condition of each kind of requires a special survey, each of which can be a couple hundred bucks… especially for the hull because doing it right requires a haul-out. A diver can have some idea of the condition of the hull, and they are way cheaper than a haul-out, however if you are getting a loan a haul-out and survey may be required. However, there might not have been the instant decision to consider us undervalued, and a salvage position taken where we wouldn’t have retained the boat. Nothing is the same from one insurance company to the next. Many insurance companies expect to have a relationship with their insureds.
It’s a simple idea, but identifying whether your watercraft is for personal or commercial use will help guide the insurance policy you require. Applications for Caribbean coverage must typically include a hurricane plan. This document should list the places across the region where the yacht owners will seek shelter if a hurricane looms. The more detailed the plan, the better, says Hahham-Gross.
The dream is to live on the boat and work until the boat is paid off, and then sail and find work as we went/figure out a freelance gig/you know, a collection of naive cliches. The cheapest way into a boat is to pay cash for a boat with a fiberglass hull built in the 1970’s, with an outboard engine. Fiberglass in the 70’s was way thicker than necessary, I’ve never heard of a 70’s boat with hull issues.
For that reason, newcomers are well-advised to work with an experienced yacht insurance broker. Such a professional can help owners determine their insurance needs, identify suitable carriers, and advocate for the owner during the application process and beyond. Building a strong connection with a broker is especially valuable for Leopard owners, says Hanham-Gross.
Don’t wait until it’s too late to find out your coverage is lacking. I remember back in the mid 80’s I tried to set up a live aboard situation in Moss Landing, CA and had similar liability issues that couldn’t be resolved. The marina has it’s own insurance for damage to their property, not to mention tort remedies.
Featuring an elevated shooting deck with railing, the Grizzly 2072 CC Sportsman is the ideal package for bowfishing. You get a 115 or 150 horsepower Mercury motor and trailer for a ready to rock Jon boat. Its tri-hull design delivers superior stability and control while the carpeted casting decks offer better grip and less slip, not to mention sparing your butt a scolding on hot days. With 90 horses pushing the RX180, it flies over the water. It also has an impressive turning radius for getting in and out of tight spots. Thanks to its basic layout combined with a flat-bottomed hull and a durable aluminum construction, they are the ideal vessel for navigating in shallow and muddy waters.
Sworn police officers and supervisors provide marine and land-based law enforcement services to residents, visitors and boaters 24 hours a day. Harbor Unit officers are trained in emergency medical procedures, CPR, dive rescue and salvage, boating rescues and fire fighting. Visit the Oceanside Police website at / for more information. Do not attempt to turn on your own water and electricity.
It is also often a bit easier to get financing and insurance for a fiberglass boat because of the lower risk of damage. Moreover, insurance providers are not always willing to pay the full amount of marine fire claims and can take steps to restrict what a marine policyholder may recover. This can result in delayed claims, low settlement offers, policy coverage conflicts, and even outright denials.
When we were saving for the cruising kitty, we found ways to cut our mobile bill by using data on our home and work WiFi. When we moved aboard, our phone plan became the primary internet source. We quickly realized we would need to rethink our data plan. We always make sure to travel at an optimal time for the current.
The type of boat, its length, and its expected use will largely dictate your boat insurance rates. Whether you have a speed boat, a small fishing boat, or a yacht will make a big difference in what you pay. As you research your options for boat insurance, you might have some questions about the cost, what kind of coverage you should purchase, and what insurance company carries the best policies for your dollar. This boat insurance tends to be more expensive since your boat’s depreciation isn’t taken into consideration. So in case of an accident, the insurer can even end up paying more than the current value of the boat. Seems to me that cruisers, especially liveaboards should be a separate insurance classification from weekend warriors. Living on your boat, cruising it far from home, means you are always working on it, thinking about improving it, learning to sail safely, ingraining navigational regs in your head by doing it all the time.
But as we settle down in our liveaboard lifestyle, we plan to explore the archipelago as our resources allow. When we arrived in Panama, we have already adopted the minimalist lifestyle. Moving onto a boat was a breeze as we only had two suitcases and two computer bags. In fact, 18 months after moving aboard we still have empty cupboards, albeit small ones.
They chose to do boat work and maintenance in Mexico and Asia where it was relatively affordable, rather than areas like Australia where such costs are high. They provisioned for their season in the Pacific while still in Mexico and therefore needed only to top up with fresh food in the islands. Finally, discretionary spending is clearly optional, depending on budget and personal preference.
